Our premium raw red maca products are made from 100% grade-A red maca roots. Instead of being dried in the intense high 
mountain sun for many days after harvest, these roots are fresh processed. After coming out of the ground they are transported to a processing facility and low temperature dried. This special handling leaves more glucosinolates in the final product. The level of glucosinolates is standardized at above 1% in our premium maca products.
What Is Premium Red Maca?
Until very recently all maca roots were dried in the sun after being harvested. That changed in the early 2000s as producers began experimenting with drying the roots in large dehydrators instead. The result was a final maca product that contained higher glucosinolate content. Glucosinolates are a nutrient found in some cruciferous vegetables that are thought to have anti-cancer properties.

Raw Premium Red Maca:
- Comes from a modern approach to processing maca developed in the past 25 years
- Is fresh processed - maca roots are dried in dehydrators immediately after harvest
- Is never heated over about 105F / 40C
- Has higher glucosinolate content - nutrients which may help prevent cancer
- Is much stronger tasting - has a more noticeable maca flavor with more spiciness
- Is limited in supply since it must be produced from fresh roots during annual harvest (June-August)
- Costs more as the process is more labor and equipment intensive
Red Maca Is Unique
Red Maca has been found to have several differences to other colors of Maca:
- Red maca has been shown, under phytonutrient analysis, to be higher in certain compounds that support the body in antioxidant and antitumoral activity.
- It has also been shown among all maca colors to contain somewhat higher levels of other pythonutrients including alkaloids, tannins, saponis and steroids.
- A study on red maca was published in the Journal Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology 2005; 3:5. In it 8 medical researchers report that over the course of 42 days: “Red maca but neither yellow nor black maca reduced significantly ventral prostate size in rats.“
- In 2010 researchers from the Universidad Peruana, Lima published a study on the effects of maca on bone structure in rats that had had their ovaries removed. The study concluded that both red and black maca supported bone strength and density among the test subjects. More information on red maca here

Why does premium raw red maca powder taste different?
The fast-drying process with which premium maca products are made leaves more of the natural spicy flavor of fresh maca root in the final product. Maca is a member of the same plant family as horseradish and is similarly strong in flavor. If you don’t enjoy the flavor of the powder you can try the capsules instead.
Are premium products more potent?
They certainly have more glucosinolate content and are a bit more concentrated in some of maca’s major nutrients. Some people report that they take less of our premium products as compared to our standard ones to get similar results.
Why do premium maca products cost more than the standard ones?
There are 2 main reasons that premium maca products cost more than their counterparts. First, the initial processing requires more effort, is time sensitive and uses specialized dehydration equipment. Second, it is only made one time per year (during harvest times) and therefore made in smaller batches that must be stored for a bit longer.
