Is Maca Good For Focus and Concentration?

While focus and concentration are not something people traditionally associated maca with, many maca users have reported positive results in their mental acuity when taking maca.  This likely has something to do with the way maca balances hormone levels and thereby enhances feelings of wellbeing.  

So, in simple terms, yes maca can help you be more focused mentally, can boost your ability to concentrate and maca can support your memory

What Is Maca Root?

For those of you who are new to our favorite superfood, lepidium meyenii maca,  is a root vegetable native to the high Andes mountains of Peru and Bolivia.   It grows at high elevations (above about 11,000 feet above sea level) and is an extremely hardy plant.   

The maca plant forms roots roughly the size and shape of a large radish.  And people indigenous to the mountains have used these roots for 1000s of years both as a daily staple food and as a natural medicine.   Traditionally, maca stands in high regard in both pre-contact cultures and European cultures living in Peru.   It is renowned for its ability to support healthy hormones, increase libido, boost fertility, enhance energy and more.  Sometimes it is referred to as “peruvian ginseng.”

Because of the promise maca has shown in supporting hormone health, more and more research has been done on it.   Over the past 20 years, nearly 1000s studies  have been published linking maca to a variety of positive health outcomes.    

When it comes to mental focus, there are only a limited number of studies available.   

  • From 2002 a study suggests that maca and especially black maca was effective in increasing “muscle gain, endurance, mental focus and libido” among the group of men tested.   
  • In 2006 a study published in the journal Complementary Alternative Medicine found that adding maca to the diets of mice energized the ability of the mice to learn increasingly complex tasks.   
  • A 2023 study entitled  “The Role of Dietary Ingredients in Mental Energy - A Scoping Review of Randomized Controlled Trials”  reviewed various types of superfoods and found that maca was promising in terms of mood enhancement and increased cognition.   

More research, and research beyond animals studies, is certainly necessary in order to draw any type of definitive conclusions, but these studies do point to maca’s potential efficacy for boosting mental activity.

Which Is The Best Maca The Help With Mental Focus and Concentration?Boost Mental Focus with Black Maca

Maca grows in a range of colors from light beige to dark gray (almost black).   Historically, these colors were simply mixed together during a maca harvest and eaten indiscriminately.    More recently, however, research has revealed differences between the efficacy of various colors of maca root for specific purposes.

Research on maca for mental focus and concentration suggests that black maca root products are the best for this purpose.    For that reason, if you are taking maca primarily to boost your mental acuity, we recommend starting with a black maca of some type.   We offer black maca in powder, capsules, liquid extracts and whole chips.    Any of them are fine to start with.   Powder is the most economical, capsules are convenient, extracts are the easiest to take and chips are the most traditional of all the types of maca product we sell.   If you’re not sure which one would be best for you let us  know and we’ll be happy to point you in the right direction.

Also, please know that other maca colors can also help with mental focus and concentration, though perhaps not quite as much.   Finally, for to maximize your results, always be sure that any maca you take is from Peru, grown organically and as fresh as possible.     

How Much Maca To Take For Focus and How To Take It

The standard therapeutic serving size for maca is 3-9 grams daily.   The exact amount varies by individual and depends on a variety of factors including body weight, age, activity level, sensitivity and more.   We can help you with that, if you decide to start out with maca.

If you are new to maca root the best practice, no matter which kind you take, is to start on the smaller side of the serving range.   Stay at that amount for a week and then gradually increase.  

While maca has no known side effects, it is nonetheless a good idea to ease into adding it to your diet.   After all, maca root is a very nutrient dense food  with some special nutrients that make it particularly powerful in the body.
