Overview
The most potent gelatinized black maca available anywhere, this premium powder is made from 100% black maca roots that are carefully and consciously grown, processed and handled. It comes from an organic farming cooperative in and around Junin, Peru. We work only with producers who own and manage their lands at a local grass roots level. The cooperative of farmers is committed both to organic farming and to producing only the highest quality maca products.
What makes this gelatinized black maca powder “premium” is the way in which it is processed. Instead of being sundried, maca roots are fresh processed immediately after harvest. After being carefully taken out of the ground they are graded and transported immediately to a processing facility. There, they cleaned in a citrus solution and low temperature dried. This special modern, fast processing leaves more glucosinolates and other nutrients in the final product.
After initial drying, the maca roots are then gelatinized. Gelatinization is a process in which maca is heated to high temperatures (160F / 70C). The heat causes the starch molecules in maca to irreversibly dissolve and the result is a powder that is easier to digest than raw maca.
It’s important to note that nothing is added to maca during the gelatinization process and that gelatinized premium black maca is 100% vegan. This type of maca powder:
Taking maca root in powder form is by far the most popular way to enjoy it. It offers several advantages when compared to taking maca in capsule or liquid extract form.
There really are no major disadvantages to taking premium gelatinized black maca powder with the exception of it costing a bit more. The reason it is higher in price is two-fold. First, since it is processed only once a year (at the time of harvest) it is limited in production. We must place our order for an entire year at that time. Second, the process involves more labor, specialized machinery and special testing to powder and standardize the final product.
Note: premium gelatinized black maca powder is darker in color than premium raw maca powder (due to the heat used in the gelatinization process). It is also less spicy tasting than the premium raw powder, but a bit stronger tasting than standard gelatinized black maca powder.
Our gelatinized premium black maca root powder is specifically indicated for male fertility and libido as well as for muscle building and endurance. Research conducted in Peru in 2009 indicated that black maca was the best of all maca powders for increasing sperm count and motility. In addition, we've had several reports from both male and female athletes that black maca is a favorite for increasing muscle mass and physical performance. Maca is classified as a food rather than a supplement or herb. There are no known contraindications or side effects related to taking it. Daily dosage recommendations range from 3 -9 grams (1-3 teaspoons) for a healthy individual weighing about 160 lbs. Maca may be taken with water, juices or milks. It also may be mixed with food. I've tried various maca brands over the last 20 years and The Maca Team brand is very special. There is definitely a difference when it comes to the quality and colors of the maca. This red maca does seem to nourish certain parts of my body while the black maca nourishes something else. I know I've been missing the nutrition these maca provide.
