Gelatinized Sundried Black Maca Root Chips, Certified Organic, Fair Trade, GMO-Free, Vegan and Raw 1 lb (454g)
Overview
Our Gelatinized Whole Black Maca Root Chips are the closest thing to complete black maca roots that are available outside of Peru. These chips are made from maca roots that are carefully and consciously grown, processed and handled. They come from an organic farming cooperative in and around Junin, Peru which is the traditional home of maca. At The Maca Team we work only with producers who own and manage their lands at a local grass roots level. The cooperative of farmers is committed both to organic farming and to producing only the highest quality Maca products. We’re happy to support their important work.
What Are Black Maca Root Chips?
Our black maca root chips are simply black maca roots that have been cut into small chunks. They are the closest to whole Maca roots that can legally be exported from Peru. That’s because maca is considered a “heritage product” of Peru and the Peruvian government does not allow whole roots to be exported to avoid them being planted in other countries. This is a way of protecting the quality and reputation of maca both for Peru and customers worldwide. And it’s proven to be important as an unlawful attempt in 2013-14 to grow maca in China was an abject failure. Read more about Peruvian vs. Chinese maca.
How Are Black Maca Root Chips Made?
Maca root chips are made from whole maca roots that are processed into small pieces after being harvested, dried and cleaned. Our chips are pre-cooked (gelatinized) to ease digestion and to make them easier to consume. Traditionally, dried maca roots are boiled with water or milk and sugar to make a hearty porridge called Mazamorra. You can prepare maca chips the same way or experiment with other ways of making them.
Are Whole Maca Root Chips Better Than Powder or Capsules?
This is an excellent question. Throughout our many years of selling high quality maca products we’ve had people report excellent results with powder, capsules, liquid extracts and chips. Based on that, we would not conclude that any is better than the other. The main difference between our liquid extracts, powder and capsules and our maca chips is that the maca chips are less processed. That means that the chips are the closest thing possible to whole dried maca roots. If eating whole foods is important to you, that is certainly an advantage. Powder on the other hand might be easier to absorb since it is much finer and therefore more likely to contact the small intestines where nutrients are absorbed.
How Do You Use Whole Black Maca Root Chips?
The simplest way to use whole maca root chips is to make a porridge out of them. This is a common traditional way of consuming whole maca roots high in the Andes. Below we’ll share a recipe for Mazamorra which is based on ancient ways of preparing maca.
These are the easiest ways to put maca root chips into your diet:
- Simmer ½ cup of maca chips for about an hour and add to oatmeal or other warm breakfast cereal
- Simmer ½ cup of maca chips for about an hour and add them to a smoothie
- Steep maca chips in hot water for 10 minutes to make a tea – add sweetener as desired
- Try the traditional Mazamorra recipe – this makes for a hearty meal!
