Why Should You Buy Fair Trade Maca Root?
Posted by The Maca Team on 30th Apr 2024
There are a lot of buzzwords that get thrown around when you’re trying to shop conscientiously, whether it’s for coffee or for clothing. How can you really be sure that your items are sourced ethically? Loopholes allow a lot of companies to use misleading terminology when it comes to marketing their products, so it’s more important than ever to know what the labels on your food and textiles mean. The same goes for maca root.
What is Fair Trade?
So what exactly does it mean when a product is referred to as “Fair Trade?” According to Fairtradecertified.org, buying fair trade means demonstrating an awareness that the items you bring into your home are connected to the livelihoods of others. You’ve probably noticed the priority some consumers place on buying items manufactured in the US, or at the very least produced outside of overseas sweatshops that pay their employees dismal wages for tiring, unsafe work. In order for a product to be considered Fair Trade Certified, it must meet a number of requirements - namely, it must be produced under safe working conditions, sustainably grown or manufactured, environmentally friendly, and it should sustain the livelihoods of those responsible for producing it.
In short - it’s not easy to be Fair Trade Certified!
Where Does Our Maca Come From?
It’s a point of pride for us that The Maca Team’s maca is sourced exclusively from Peru. Our maca is grown in the Lake Junin plateau region, where it’s been harvested by humans for hundreds of years now. Maca has a long and storied history as a resource, valued for its many associated beneficial properties and a cultural treasure besides. The Inca people of Peru consumed maca for help conceiving children, for focus and mental clarity, and for an energy boost - many of the same reasons for maca consumption today.
There are a number of reasons we’ve chosen to source our maca directly from Peruvian farmers. First, Peru is strictly non-GMO with regard to its agricultural products, so any maca products you purchase from The Maca Team are free of GMOs. Peruvian maca is also the freshest, most potent maca available. We believe sourcing our maca root from its place of origin allows us to offer the highest quality maca currently on the market.
But perhaps most importantly, we’re committed to ensuring that our maca is and always will be certified Fair Trade. While maca has been grown with limited success in other parts of the world and even imitated in lab environments, it remains a treasured cultural commodity for the people of Peru. So it’s our goal to ensure that the men and women employed by the local co-op of farmers we work with in the Junin plateau area are compensated fairly for their hard work.
Our Fair Trade organic maca is sustainably grown and harvested by farmers invested in the quality and well-being of the land. Fields are rotated to ensure the continued viability of the soil, and our maca is harvested in small batches at the peak of the annual season, ensuring that you’re getting the freshest maca possible.
