Top Uses for Black Maca Root

Posted by The Maca Team on 15th Oct 2024

Did you know that there are three different colors of maca root? Historically harvested as a tri-color blend, science has only recently begun to recognize the unique effects of each color: black, red, and yellow. Though there’s no such thing as the “wrong” maca, there are several reasons why you might choose one over the others. Previously, we’ve gone over some of the benefits of red maca and yellow maca. Today, let’s take a look at some of the factors that make black maca root special..

What is Black Maca Root?

Maca root, or Lepidium meyenii, is a root vegetable belonging to the same family as cauliflower and cabbage. Black maca is the rarest of the three maca root colors, making up just 15-20% of the annual harvest in the Peruvian Andes, where maca originates. Maca root is associated with numerous health benefits, but the most commonly known are its energizing properties and its reputation for combatting sexual dysfunction.

Like red and yellow maca roots, black maca roots have long been linked with a particular set of perks: namely, it’s considered the right maca for building muscle, boosting stamina and strength, and supporting libido and fertility in men. While these statements haven’t been evaluated by the FDA, there’s a reason maca powder has long been embraced by the men and women of Peru as a powerful superfood.

What is Black Maca Good For?

Clinical trials have provided some evidence supporting the accounts of maca’s positive effects. Black maca features predominantly in many studies, and as such it’s easy to find publications reporting on its impact on subjects of various species. Reports assessing the effects of regular consumption of black maca in relation to erectile dysfunction, sperm quality and motility, and improved memory and learning found that maca did, in fact, bring about positive results. These manifested as increased male sexual behavior, larger litters, and some impressive lesser-known reactions like reversal of osteoporosis, suggestion of neuroprotective effects, and even protection against UV radiation.

In the early 2000s researchers uncovered some interesting facts about black maca in particular: for example, that black maca shows a higher antioxidant effect than red or yellow. It also helps regulate glucose, which could make it a big help in supporting a healthier metabolism.

Studies have found that maca consumption - particularly black maca - can contribute to the accumulation of muscle mass. This is where we introduce you to All-Natural Bodybuilder Ed Urbano, a retired carpenter who became serious about putting on muscle in 2009. Ed started taking maca after a recommendation from his personal trainer. While there isn't a lot of fat content in maca, its hormone-balancing properties and nutrient profile can help the body put on weight through muscle development. It’s also naturally anabolic, which means that it aids the body in building up muscle. Research has found that consuming maca encourages muscular hypertrophy, or growth.
