There’s a tendency to assume that sufferers of sexual dysfunction are almost exclusively men. Yet according to the Mayo Clinic, “many women experience problems with some sexual dysfunction at some point, and some have difficulties throughout their lives.” Women can and do experience issues with their sexual health, whether they’re medication-induced or due to some hormonal imbalance. While it’s important to discuss any serious health concerns with a licensed medical professional, you can remedy some of the worst symptoms of women’s sexual dysfunction with a healthy diet including maca root.
Maca for Women’s Sex Drive
For centuries now, locals of the areas of the Andes where maca root originates have considered it a sort of aphrodesiac. And this believe isn’t unfounded - research has suggested that maca can help address low sex drive in women, particularly when the issue arises from prescribed antidepressants like SSRIs and SNRIs. Participants of a 2015 study experiencing sexual dysfunction regularly consumed maca for a period of twelve weeks, with the study concluding that maca root may noticeably improve sex drive in both postmenopausal and premenopausal women.
Menopausal women in particular struggle with sexual dysfunction, as the significant change in hormone levels that occurs as part of the process negatively impacts the libido. But research into women’s sexual dysfunction has been historically underfunded, and though there are ready pharmaceutical treatments for erectile dysfunction there’s no real equivalent for women save estrogen replacement therapy, which isn’t an option for everyone. However, studies have found that maca “appears to be a safe, possibly effective way to improve sexual dysfunction and desire in menopausal women.” Research performed within the past twenty years lends credence to the theory that maca root, when regularly consumed in combination with a healthy diet and exercise, can exert a “hormone-balancing” effect on women’s bodies. It’s this effect that can help alleviate sexual dysfunction in women. Read more on maca for libido.
Maca for Women’s Fertility
Further studies performed on laboratory mice found that mice given maca regularly produced larger litters. This research supports the theory that maca, namely red maca, can help boost sexual desire and the possibility of conception in women.
"We tried a lot of things to get pregnant before we learned about Peruvian Maca in a book on natural fertility. My husband and I started taking it religiously after that. I got pregnant 6 months later and I’m sure the maca helped."

Maca contains neither testosterone nor estrogen. It is, however, an adaptogen, meaning that it exerts a “normalizing” effect on bodily functions. This manifests in large part by helping to balance your hormones, improving the chances of conception.
What Maca is Best for Women’s Sex Drive?
Which maca is best for women? It’s not an easy question to answer, at least not directly - everyone’s goals are different, and the “right” maca product for you will ultimately depend on what you’re looking for from your maca routine.
Maca root grows in three colors: black, red, and yellow. Red maca root occurs for about 25% of the annual maca harvest, and it’s one of our best sellers – for a good reason. While we often recommend red maca for women, the right maca for you will depend on your body and your desired goals.
