How Does Maca Root Fit Into Your Diet?
Posted by The Maca Team on 29th Feb 2024
One of the most intimidating parts of changing your diet is figuring out where to start. Adding maca to your routine might seem much the same. If you’ve browsed our website, you’ve probably noticed that you can purchase our organic maca root products in a number of formulations, ranging from raw powdered maca root to maca coffee substitutes. So where does maca fit in for you? The answer to that is going to depend on a number of factors, but we can offer some helpful suggestions on how and where to start. After all, maca is just a humble little root vegetable - it doesn’t have to be complicated, does it?
Maca Root: A Nutritional Powerhouse
Maca is so much more than just a root vegetable! Part of the family Brassicaceae, it’s closely related to cabbages and radishes. It originates in the extreme altitudes of the Andes, where it’s been consumed by people indigenous to the region for centuries. In Peru, where our maca is grown, maca has long been hailed for its energy-boosting properties. It’s been credited with helping people (and even livestock!) conceive, as well as aiding with mental acuity and stamina.
Recently we went into some detail about the many nutritional benefits of adding maca to your diet, namely the abundance of vitamins, minerals, and more. Maca isn’t just another nutritional supplement - it’s a superfood, an adaptogen, and a neuroprotectant, and as part of a balanced diet and exercise regimen it may play a role in drastically improving the quality of your life.
How Should I Take Maca Root?
As we’ve stated numerous times in the past, there’s no right or wrong way to enjoy maca root. It can be as simple as stirring a teaspoon or two of powdered maca into a glass of water in the morning. Here are some key factors to consider: what are your health goals? What’s your ideal serving size? Do you have a sensitive digestive system, and when do you need the most energy in the day? As you might’ve gathered, the “right” way to take your daily dose of maca root will vary from person to person. Your digestion will also impact what formulation you might choose to try out. If you’re prone to an upset stomach, raw maca root may not be the best option for you. Our gelatinized maca products, however, have been pre-cooked to cut back on the starch content, making them easier to…well…stomach. And if you’re not a particular fan of the taste of maca, there’s no need to fear - adding it to a nutritious maca smoothie (my personal preference!) may help disguise the flavor, and you could also test out our maca capsules or our more mild-flavored liquid maca extracts, which can be administered directly beneath your tongue or added to your beverage of choice.
When Should I Take Maca Root?
Maca doesn’t have any real side effects, but it’s important to remember that one of its many benefits is a boost to your energy. For that reason, we don’t recommend having maca in the late afternoon or evening unless you’re going to be working the night shift. Many of our happy customers enjoy their maca first thing in the morning. Our maca coffee substitute, The Morning Motivator, is a blend of our sustainably-grown Fair Trade maca root powder and a few other organic ingredients that will get your day started on the right foot without the post-caffeine jitters. And our sponsored athletes prefer to have their daily dose of maca before a strenuous workout so they can keep pushing through when it really counts!
