Can Maca Improve Your Sex Drive?

Posted by The Maca Team on 20th Aug 2024

Did you know that about half of all men in the US report struggling with erectile dysfunction? While the reasons for this are greatly varied, that’s still a lot of men struggling with a condition that faces a lot of social stigma. And they aren’t alone - the Mayo Clinic reports that “many women experience problems with some sexual dysfunction at some point, and some have difficulties throughout their lives.” It’s easy to understand why someone suffering from sexual dysfunction would be desperate for a quick fix, which in many cases involves turning to pharmaceuticals. And while there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s worth noting that there are some natural remedies for addressing low sex drive in both men AND women - and maca root is one of them.

Maca and Men's Libido

Maca has a lot of health-boosting qualities, but it’s best known for its impact on male virility. Today, maca is looked at as a sort of “natural Viagra.” While that association is something of a stretch, there are numerous ways maca root can positively impact men’s sexual health.

Though the research into maca’s many purported benefits is still ongoing, numerous studies have linked consuming maca with improvements in erectile dysfunction. Men participating in studies on the effects of maca on their ED have reported experiencing significant improvement in their general and sexual well-being. This might be because although maca doesn’t contain any testosterone it is an adaptogen, meaning that it works toward helping the body achieve hormonal balance.

In addition, maca has been associated with improved quantity and quality of semen. Participants in a study who consumed maca for four months demonstrated an increase in sperm motility and production.

These findings serve to indicate that the use of maca for addressing erectile function is more than just lore - it’s backed by science, too.

Maca and Women's Libido

Maca can help address low sex drive in women, particularly when the issue arises from prescribed antidepressants like SSRIs and SNRIs. Participants of a 2015 study experiencing sexual dysfunction regularly consumed maca for a period of twelve weeks, with the study concluding that maca root may noticeably improve sex drive in both postmenopausal and premenopausal women. Further studies performed on laboratory mice found that mice given maca regularly produced larger litters. This research supports the theory that maca, namely red maca, can help boost sexual desire and the possibility of conception in women.

Remember when we said that maca doesn’t contain testosterone? It doesn’t contain estrogen, either. But research performed within the past twenty years lends credence to the theory that maca root, when regularly consumed in combination with a healthy diet and exercise, can exert a “hormone-balancing” effect on women’s bodies. It’s this effect that can help alleviate sexual dysfunction in women.
