Adding Maca to Your Diet...Where Does Maca Fit In?

There’s no right or wrong way to enjoy your maca. But if you’ve decided to add maca to your diet, you may be wondering the best way to go about it. And there’s no definitive answer to that question - it all depends on your lifestyle! Maca smoothies before or after workouts are very popular among gym fiends, and a lot of our happy customers enjoy a cup of maca coffee first thing in the morning. But there are all kinds of ways to fit maca root into your routine! Let’s take a look at some of our favorite maca methods.
Maca in the Morning
It’s easy to enjoy your maca in the morning. The most obvious is with our maca coffee substitute blend, The Morning Motivator. Available in sweetened and unsweetened varieties, just mix a spoonful of the coffee powder mix with your milk of choice and savor a warm (or cold) energizing beverage that will keep you going through the day.
But getting your maca in at the start of your day can be as simple as taking a dropperful of our maca liquid extract with a glass of water, or popping a few maca capsules. It all depends on your schedule - while it’d be great to savor that coffee, if you’re rushing to get out the door first thing in the morning, speed and convenience may be your priority!
Maca Smoothies
Whether you’re looking to power a run or pump some iron, maca smoothies are a great way to get your daily dose of maca in. It’s especially ideal if you don’t particularly care for the taste of maca powder - the flavor is easily hidden behind whatever you choose to blend into your mix, whether that’s wholesome fruits and veggies or peanut butter.
This chia smoothie recipe is a great way to get two of our favorite Peruvian superfoods into your diet, Maca and Chia.
Ingredients
- 2 frozen bananas
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 1 tbsp almond butter
- 1 tbsp maca powder (I used The Maca Team organic premium maca root powder)
- 1 tbsp of chia seeds
- ½ tsp pure vanilla extract
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon + sprinkling
Directions:
Add all ingredients to a blender. Turn on the blender for 2-3 minutes. Sprinkle with ground cinnamon.
Maca Dishes
Did you know you can cook with maca? In fact, historically the people of the Peruvian Andes frequently incorporated maca root into many of their traditional dishes! But you don’t need to look too far for maca recipes - we have lots to share, like these delicious sourdough blueberry maca muffins.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup sourdough starter
- 1 1/2 cup homemade yogurt
- 1/4 cup coconut oil (melted)
- 2 eggs
- 1 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 cup oatmeal (old-fashioned)
- 1/2 cup rapadura
- 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 3 teaspoons nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons red maca (can use other varieties/colors)
- 3 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
- 1 teaspoon celtic sea salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
- stevia to taste
Directions:
- Combine sourdough starter, yogurt, coconut oil, and eggs in a large mixing bowl.
- Add whole wheat flour, oatmeal, rapadura, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, red maca, vanilla and almond extracts, and salt and mix well.
- Cover the bowl and let sit in the fridge for 24 hours.
- When you're ready to bake, take the muffin dough out of the fridge and let come to room temperature. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and spray muffin pans with coconut oil.
- Mix in the baking soda, frozen blueberries, and stevia.
- Fill each muffin cup 3/4 full. Bake for 30-35 minutes.
- Let cool for about five minutes, then remove carefully from muffin pan and let cool on a cooling rack.
