The Do's and Don't's of Maca
Posted by The Maca Team on 15th Mar 2023
Whenever you’re considering making a change to your diet, there are many factors to think about. How will this change impact your current regimen? Will it interact with any medications or supplements you currently take? And how much is too much? This applies to maca as much as it does to any other health-conscious decision you might make, and it’s important to know the facts.
Maca is a Food
Maca isn’t like most dietary supplements - in fact, it isn’t a supplement at all! Maca is a food - a superfood, to be specific, much like kale or blueberries. This means it’s rich in antioxidants and is reported to have numerous beneficial qualities, improving the overall health of those who consume it. Why should you take maca? That depends on what you’re looking to get out of it. Each color maca root is associated with a particular purported benefit: for example, black maca is said to enhance libido and virility for men, while red maca is said to boost fertility women. A tricolor maca root blend, as it would’ve been consumed historically in the Andes of Peru where it’s largely grown, has been said to improve mental acuity and focus.
DO know what you expect to get from taking maca root
DON’T assume it’s a magical cure-all. Maca should be part of a balanced regimen.
Serving Size Matters
We offer our organic maca root products in a variety of sizes and formulations. How you choose to consume our fair-trade maca will impact your serving size, and that in turn will affect your perceived results. You might choose to try our raw yellow maca root powder, for example. You can purchase this 100% powdered maca root in bags containing 1kg, 1lb, or 80z of product. While we generally recommend 1-3 teaspoons mixed into your water or smoothie daily, you can consult our Serving Guidelines to get a better idea how much maca you should consider taking in order to achieve the results you’re looking for.
DO do your research on which maca to take and how much
DON’T assume that one size fits all - everyone’s ideal serving size is different!
Find the Right Formulation For You
How should you take maca? That will also depend on a number of factors ranging from your serving size to whether or not you mind the taste of maca. Some people don’t care for the flavor powdered maca adds to their food, and premium maca blends like our premium raw black maca powder can be even spicier than our standard air-dried maca. We’ve taken into account the fact that some prospective buyers might have particularly sensitive stomachs which can make adding maca to their diet a little tricky. We offer gelatinized maca root products like these gelatinized red maca root chips that have been pre-cooked, reducing the starch content and making them easier to digest.
