Cooking With Maca
Posted by The Maca Team on 6th Apr 2023
There are many ways to add maca to your diet - it’s a food, after all, and as a superfood like kale and blueberries, it’ll add a healthy boost to your favorite recipes. We make our maca root available in several formulations, including powders, capsules, liquid extracts and whole maca root chips. What this means is that there’s no right or wrong way to incorporate maca into your routine. But if you’re not sure where to start, here are some handy suggestions and recipes!
Maca Beverages
The most common way many of our customers consume their maca is in smoothies, either first thing in the morning or after a workout. What better way to boost your energy than with an easy, healthy maca smoothie? Our maca green food smoothie contains bananas, kale, and raw or gelatinized maca powder. Toss them in a blender along with the other ingredients, and you’ve got a smoothie that’s vegan, filling, and delicious besides!
If you’re on a strict juicing diet, it’s just as easy to add maca to your regimen. Just toss your favorite veggies into your juicer along with your preferred maca powder, and you’ve got a maca power juice.
But if you’re looking for something a little more luxurious, this Maca Hot Chocolate might be what you need. You can make it vegan using soy or almond milk or even evaporated milk for extra creaminess. Combine our organic maca powder with dates and raw cocoa powder, garnish as desired, and savor on a cold, wet day with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
Sweet and Savory Maca Dishes
Our healthy pumpkin lentil maca soup recipe is another cold day favorite. It combines lentils, pumpkin, and full fat coconut milk with a variety of flavorful herbs and spices as well as a couple tablespoons of maca powder for a dish that’s sure to leave you feeling warm and satisfied.
Have you got a sweet tooth? Good news - you can bake with maca too. Our recipe for sourdough blueberry maca muffins is a delightful treat that’s sure to make your morning or snack break brighter. Sourdough can be a little intimidating, but you’ll find this recipe worth the trouble. We recommend our powdered red maca for this one, but you can use any of our fair-trade, organically-grown maca products.
Traditional Maca Dishes
Cooking with maca isn’t a new idea. The inhabitants of the Peruvian Andes in which maca is traditionally grown have been doing it for centuries. Maca has long been a staple of their diet, and they consumed it as a tri-color or “heritage blend” mix of all three maca root colors. We’d like to pass along some of the traditional Peruvian maca dishes shared with us by our friends in the Junin Plateau, where our maca root is sourced. Mazamorra de Maca is a hearty porridge traditionally prepared with whole maca roots. Our maca root chips are conveniently available in pre-cut chunks, which makes them easy to add to the other ingredients that go into this simple but filling dish.
You can also try out chicha de maca, a sweet, fermented Peruvian beverage prepared similarly to kombucha and just as tasty…and good for you besides.
