While it’s common knowledge that maca root is safe for adults, we get a lot of questions about its safety and efficacy for certain age groups: namely, for young children and the elderly. We’re happy to say that while you should always exercise caution with what you feed your children and your elders, maca is perfectly safe for them! In fact, there are plenty of reasons this superfood should be consumed by all ages.

If you run a Google search for maca for infants, you’ll see a lot of questions about whether or not consuming maca root is safe for breastfeeding mothers. And while both sides of the debate are present (heatedly, on occasion) on mommy forums, most reliable sources of medical information strongly advise exercising caution with regard to what you consume while breastfeeding - for good reason. The safest course of action is to consult with your licensed medical professional if you have any doubts. But it’s worth pointing out that people native to the Andes - including breastfeeding mothers - safely consume up to 100g of fresh maca root daily.

There are so many factors that go into how a guardian feeds their child, and this complex issue has been a topic of increasing debate over the years. Maca has been a staple food in the Andes for centuries, and has long been safely consumed by children as well as adults. In short - maca root is safe for kids! Unlike many over-the-counter supplements, maca is a nutrient-dense superfood that can be enjoyed in many ways - even by the pickiest eaters. If you’re wondering how to add maca root to your child’s diet, here’s a recipe for a tasty smoothie that’s sure to appeal to your child’s sweet tooth:

Ingredients:

  • ½-1 cup almond milk (if you would like a thicker drink, use ½-3/4 cup milk)
  • 1.5 cup cooked butternut squash or pumpkin
  • ¼ cup + 2 tbsp peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp lime (or lemon) juice
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tbsp organic gelatinized black maca powder (or any other maca of your choice)

Maca Root for the Elderly

There are a number of reasons the elderly should consider incorporating maca root into their diet. It can alleviate some of the most serious “symptoms” of aging - enough so that you’ll find yourself asking why you wouldn’t add maca to your diet!

For example, according to this 2016 study, evidence suggests maca can act as a “functional food” for slowing down age-related cognitive decline. Maca was also found to alleviate some of the most severe symptoms of menopause, from sexual dysfunction and mood swings to hot flashes and more. And don’t forget that maca root’s nutritional content also works toward helping the body preserve bone density. Bone mass typically decreases with age after your thirties, at which point the risk of developing osteoporosis steadily increases. Researchers have confirmed that the variety of nutrients in maca can act to prevent the development of osteoporosis.
