Can You Eat Maca Everyday?

One of the most common questions we get is: Is it safe to eat maca everyday? There are a few important things to know before you start to eat maca. Here we break them down and give you our complete recommendations based on over 15 years of experience with maca.
MACA IS A FOOD: Even though maca is renowned as a medical supplement, it is first and foremost a food. It is considered a cruciferous vegetable and is part of the mustard family. Maca comes from a turnip-like root found high in the Andes mountain range and has been eaten for at least 3,000 years by native Peruvians. It has a nutty, almost butterscotch-like taste to it.
YOU CAN’T TAKE TOO MUCH: Since maca is a food and not a drug or supplement, it is not really possible to consume too much. Just like you can’t “eat too much” spinach. You certainly cannot overdose on maca. That said, people have reported experiencing an increased heart rate and a nervous energy when they consumed a larger serving than recommended. Therefore, we recommend starting with a more conservative serving.
TAKING MACA FOR A PERIOD OF TIME: You may not notice the health benefits of maca immediately. It is actually reported that it takes 2-3 weeks of taking maca in order for it to be fully effective. That is why it is a good idea to take a consistent amount everyday.
CYCLE ON AND OFF: It is also a good idea to take maca everyday for a few months and then take a break. This allows the cell receptors to take a break too so they don’t shut down if they think they are getting too much maca.
YOUR WEIGHT AND BODY TYPE MAY AFFECT HOW YOUR BODY REACTS TO MACA: Your weight is an important factor in determining how much maca you should take. Bigger people can generally take more. Smaller people should start with a smaller amount. Over a long stretch of time, bigger people may build a larger natural tolerance to maca and therefore may need to take it more regularly.
MACA AFFECTS DIFFERENT PEOPLE DIFFERENTLY: Even after factoring in weight, gender, and body type, the effects of maca may vary from person to person. It is a good idea to start with small doses intermittently and gradually increase your dosage size and consumption rate according to how your body reacts.
