Raw Maca Powder
What exactly is maca powder? Maca powder is a traditional Peruvian superfood made from the ground root of the maca plant. The maca plant comes from the high Andes mountains of Peru, where it has been cultivated and used for thousands of years by people indigenous to the area. Maca powder is rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, copper, and iron. It also contains important amino acids and antioxidants. Due to its high nutritional content, it is often used as a natural supplement supported by numerous studies on how maca can help to boost energy, improve mood, and enhance overall health. But not all maca powder is prepared exactly the same way.
In the case of our raw maca powders, the process is relatively simple. All of our maca is grown in the Lake Junin plateau region, where the roots take about 9 months to mature fully. Once they’ve been harvested they’re set out to dry in the sun, a process that takes 15-40 days before they’re stored to await further processing into powder. This follows their cleaning and sorting by color. Stainless steel machinery grinds the whole roots in stages, taking them from smaller chunks to the fine powder you’ll find in our foil-lined food-grade bags.
Your maca’s journey doesn’t end there. It moves on to a careful inspection process that not only looks out for any spare debris that might have made it through the grinding, but also analyzes the maca’s nutritional content to ensure that it wasn’t in any way compromised during processing.
All that’s left for your raw maca after that is for it to be packaged individually, and then sent out to consumers like you!
Premium Maca Powder
So what sets our premium maca root powder apart? Remember when we explained that our raw maca is sundried for several days? In the case of premium maca, that process is somewhat different. Instead of drying in the sun, our premium maca consists of maca roots that have been fresh-processed immediately after harvesting in low-temperature dehydrators. This special processing gives us a product that’s higher in glucosinolates, which are anti-inflammatory, cancer-fighting compounds found in maca root. It’s a modern approach that yields maca with a more spicy flavor than standard raw maca, and it’s the most complete and potent all-around maca currently available on the market. Because of this, it’s slightly more expensive than our raw maca products, so keep that in mind while you’re shopping!
Gelatinized Maca Powder
What does it mean when your maca powder has been gelatinized? You might notice that it doesn’t look very gelatinous. That’s because maca that has undergone the gelatinization process has simply been pre-cooked to cut down on the root’s starch content. This is especially relevant when you consider that one of the few complaints you might hear about consuming maca is the occasional upset stomach. It’s not a very common “side-effect,” but it’s a rare issue that can be remedied by switching to gelatinized maca, which is the easiest maca to digest and best for anyone with a sensitive stomach.
